Giovanni Verrando
Il ruvido dettaglio celebrato da Aby Warburg
(2002)
for fl., ob, vl, vlc and pf

Length: 09:00

Aby Warburg is perhaps the man who has had most influence in the twentieth century on our conception of the history of Art. Through his studies, he has indicated the path which enables us to discover in the figurative arts the concretion of an entire civilization, with all its obscure psychic tensions.
While he was developing his impressive work, however, Warburg was struck periodically (from 1918 onwards) by nervous breakdowns and was obliged to spend lengthy periods of time in hospital. In 1919 he was admitted to the Ludwig Binswanger clinic at Kreuzlingen. For a long time his condition appeared to be desperate, but in 1923 - to demonstrate his recovery - he asked the doctors their permission to prepare a lecture and to read it himself to the other patients. On 23 April 1923, Warburg gave his celebrated lecture on "The Ritual of the Serpent", which then appeared in 1939 on the Warburg Institute Journal with a demure note saying that it had been given for the first time "before a non-specialized public".
In fact, that discourse was at one and the same time a confession and a testament.
