Mauro Castellano was born in Savona in 1962; he studied piano in his native town with Walter Ferrato, graduating brilliantly aged seventeen at Genoa Conservatory. He studied composition with Sylvano Bussotti and was his assistant at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, where he also attended a masterclass held by Maurizio Pollini.
He has played for many important music institutions in Italy and abroad: Biennale di Venezia; Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; Teatro Regio, Turin; Nuova Consonanza, Rome; Festival of Brescia and Bergamo; Autunno Musicale a Como; Théâtre Renaud-Barrault, Paris; Alte Oper, Frankfurt; Féstival of Luxembourg, Linz, Prague, Zagreb; La Mama Experimental Theatre, New York; Monday Evenings Concerts, Los Angeles, etc.
Castellano, who is considered one of the most interesting instrumentalist-composers of his generation, has frequently been invited to take part in international festivals and has received commissions from institutions such as: Società Italiana di Musicologia (Uno scritto pianistico, 1987); Orchestra Studio per la Nuova Musica, Genoa (Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra, 1990); Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte di Montepulciano (Orfeo Minore, 1994); Romaeuropa Festival, etc.
His compositions are published by Bèrben and Edipan.
He has broadcast for RAI, RSI and RTL and recorded for the labels Ricordi, Wergo, Materiali Sonori and Diapason.
He now teaches at the "N. Paganini" Conservatory of Genoa and is also "répétiteur" at the Teatro dell'Opera Giocosa, Savona.
