The President of the Italian Republic, through Decree n° 2/4/2002 and on proposal made by Giuliano Urbani, Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities, awarded the Third Class Degree, together with the Bronze Medal of Benemerito of Culture and Arts, to the Italian musicians who won the auditions for the formation of the European Union Youth Orchestra.
The European Union Youth Orchestra was the first musical initiative of the countries of the EU and it was sponsored by Claudio Abbado, Sir Edward Heath and Joy Bryer. The best italian musicians has joined it since its foundation, creating, together with their colleagues from other countries, a symphonic orchestra that nowadays is considered to be a symbol of the European Union itself. Rai-Radiotelevisione italiana, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foundation Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, has been organizing the Italian selections for twenty-four years, offering to the musicians an extraordinary life and professional experience.
Thanks to the support of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, General Directorate for Live Performing, in 2001 was realized the first edition of "Suono Italiano per l'Europa", held in Santa Severina (KR), an event meant to give visiibility to the Italian musicians of the EUYO.
