Luciano Tristaino flute
Marcello Bonacchelli clarinet
Gisbert Watty guitar

The ensemble developed from the coming together of three musicians with a special interest in classical and contemporary chamber music. The trio also forms an extension of the duo for flute and guitar (Luciano Tristaino and Gisbert Watty), which began performing back in 1991.  The trio's first concert took place in 2001 and consisted of a program of first performances of new compositions for this unusual instrumentation. This was followed by a substantial workshop and rehearsal phase that covered the most important works of the classical and modern repertoire.  The three musicians primarily aim for perfect harmony between sound colour and dynamics, maintaining a precise balance among the three instruments. The trio constantly broadens its repertoire through arrangements of historical compositions such as Beethoven's Serenade op.8, Stravinsky's Easy Pieces, and Piazzolla's Le Grand Tango.  More importantly, the trio is constantly engaged in the commissioning of new works from around the world, approaching composers with an interest in the trio's particular instrumentation and with a willingness to explore new possibilities for chamber music.

Luciano Tristaino studied in Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Holland with Mario Ancillotti, Paul Meisen and Rien de Reede. He has performed with the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, and in 1994 he was a finalist at the Karajan Academy audition for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Apart from a busy concert schedule in Italy, Tristaino has also made regular appearances in Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Romania, Hungary and the United States, both as a soloist and chamber performer. He has made recordings for RAI, ABC (Australia), Bayerischer Rundfunk, RTSO, Koch-Schwan, Move and Arts. His interest in contemporary music has led to collaborations with composers such as Visser, Stockmeier, Reiner, Saunders, Hazeldine, Colombo-Taccani, Nicoli, Bellotti and Anichini (Concerto for flute and orchestra). Tristaino is currently engaged with the Ensemble Nuovo Contrappunto, having recently worked with such renown figures as Fedele, Lombardi, Corghi, Vacchi, Stroppa, Manzoni, Berio and also with exponents of the younger generation of composers, including Roberta Vacca, Massimo Lauricella, and Giovanni Sollima. He has recorded CDs with music by Petrassi and Sciarrino, as well as a recent double-CD with eleven first performances (Ars Publica). Tristaino teaches flute at the Conservatorio in Reggio Calabria and at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.

Marcello Bonacchelli studied clarinet with Michele Del Vicario at the Conservatorium of Lucca and with Antony Pay at the Accademia Internazionale "L.Perosi" in Biella. He has won numerous prizes in both national and international competitions and played in many Italian orchestras, including the Camerata Musicale di Prato, the Orchestra del Festival Pucciniano di Torre del Lago, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Udine, and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Since 1995 he is the clarinettist of the Florence-based Ensemble Nuovo Contrappunto. Together with the ensemble he has performed all over Italy and in different european countries, recorded a CD with the label Nuova Era, and presented first performances of works by Morricone, Vacchi, Piacentini und Baratelli.

Gisbert Watty studied guitar with Maritta Kersting at the Robert Schumann Conservatory in Düsseldorf and with Flavio Cucchi at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. Following his diploma and after further studies with Eliot Fisk, Manuel Barrueco and Oscar Ghiglia, he appeared in numerous concerts in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Norway and Australia. His performance activities focus on chamber music and contemporary music. He has made recordings with the Guitar Symphonietta (Giulia Records), the chamber music group of the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana (Koch-Schwann/Aulos), the Tuchfühlungsensemble (Ars Publica), the flutist Luciano Tristaino (Move) and as a soloist (Ars Publica). He has also appeared in radio and television broadcasts for West German Radio WDR, RAI and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation ABC and Radio New Zealand. Watty has also been a steady champion of new works by composers worldwide with a substantial number of first performances.
