Pietro Polotti received a musical education, studying piano, composition and electronic music at the Conservatories of Trieste, Milan and Venice, respectively, and obtained the corresponding diplomas from the three institutions. He also got a degree in physics at the University of Trieste, Italy - 110/110 cum laude. In 2002, he obtained a Ph.D. in Communication Systems from the EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland) with a thesis on a new method for sound synthesis based on wavelet transforms, denoted Fractal Additive Synthesis – Advisors: Gianpaolo Evangelista and Martin Vetterli.
In 2001, he was visiting researcher for two months at the Music and Technology Group of the University Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona, Spain.
He taught Digital Audio Signal Processing at the Polytechnic School of Milan, the University of Trieste and the Conservatory of Music of Como, Italy.
Presently, he teaches Music and New Technologies at the Conservatory “G. Tartini” of Trieste, Italy. He also collaborates with the University of Verona as sound designer within the European project NIW (Natural Interactive Walking − www.niwproject.eu) and was part to the EU project CLOSED (Closing the Loop Of Sound Evaluation and Design − closed.ircam.fr). Recently, he was also member of the Interaction research group at the University IUAV of Venice. In the past, he was employed by the Polytechnic School of Milan as part of the IST European project TAI-CHI (Tangible Acoustic Interfaces for Computer Human Interaction − www.taichi.cf.ac.uk), working on acoustic-based in-solid localization and characterization methods for interaction design.
In 2008 he was visiting researcher at IRCAM for one month, coordinating a research project, in collaboration with the Perception and Sound Design Team, about the employment of rhetorical principles for sound design in human-computer interaction (trac.sme-ccppd.org/SID/changeset/764).
He is author or co-author of more than thirty papers on international journals and proceedings of international conferences. He is also active as electroacoustic composer.
In general, during the last years, his interest moved from digital sound processing and acousmatic music towards sonic interaction design and interactive arts focused on sound. He is co-founder of the Gamelunch group (www.soundobject.org/BasicSID/Gamelunch). In 2008, he started with Maurizio Goina the EGGS project (Elementary Gestalts for Gesture Sonification − www.visualsonic.eu) that investigates the representation of gesture through sound, aimed at artistic, didactic and therapeutic applications.
