Autodafe was composed in 1992 and has a rather peculiar title. The word was usually uttered by the Spanish inquisitor when publicly sentencing the prisoner to death for heresy. Dall'Ongaro's piece in five movements also has a special subtitle: Five ways towards the gallows. The composer writes: In each movement I treated a different technical problem and built up the simple hint towards a sincere explosion. Dall'Ongaro emphasises that these movements are burning, short piano aphorisms, due to the dense writing full of exaggerated acrobatic tricks, intended to piano virtuosos.
