Quadro
(1993)
for String quartet and Tape

Length: 10:30
1 Performance: 18° Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte di Montepulciano - 1995

Production: Edison Studio - Rome

Quadro is the word Haydn used for his first string quartets and in Italian means also picture. The performers remain motionless in the two sections for solo tape presenting an image of themselves as a quartet, while the tape offers an elaboration of the quartet sound. The piece is in one movement, but it explores various historical and sonic aspects of the string quartet sound. It focuses particularly on the transitions from harmonic to inharmonic and vice versa. That is also the frame of reference for the encounter between the tape and the instrumental parts. The tape was created using the techniques of real-time (PODX) and non real-time (CSound) granular synthesis of string quartet sounds. The piece was commissioned by Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte Montepulciano and selected to be performed (Penderecki Quartet) at the International Computer Music Conference 95 (Banff - Canada) and published in the CD of ICMC '95.
