Pietro Pirelli
Fiordiluce

for 2 mar., vibr, fl. and elect.

Fiordiluce, composed in the summer of 2001, is a stage in a creative process which I have been developing for some time. I study and experiment on the musical material and realize coherent but different elements, particularly at gestural level. I try to extract from them their expressive nature and, above all, their capacity for combining with other elements within a changeable flow of time. These elements appear, disappear and reappear like characters, like fragments of conversation. My score is a montage which, as it progresses, suggests articulation, direction and the subtle balance between foreseeable and unforeseeable.
Fiordiluce derives from a work I carried out in 1999 on acoustic materials continuously recorded on tape. The music, diffused in a room of an art exhibition, accompanies the movements of the flowers of light realized in the early Seventies by the artist Marinelli at Pirelli. They are circles of light which pulsate in a slow opening and closing. The music, in this case, searches for an appropriate dimension of relationship and complementarity with the perception of the images in movement. Woe betide any prevarication.
To conjoin and share perceptive spaces with other arts is a good exercise for the composer in essentiality and evocative capacity. Is it a renunciation of the complexity and force of musical writing? For me, not at all. On the contrary: these limits represent a wager, a stimulus to avoid perceptive saturation.
I wanted to dedicate my new composition to the creator of the flowers of light, my mother.
However, while I was finishing this work, I was shattered by the news of the terrible events at the G8. I therefore dedicate it to the cities of Gothenborg and Genoa.
