"La bassa are the clouds that skim the horizon, the river with all its stories, the heat of summer, heavy like a blanket of sweat, the cold that is a fairy tale cold, which needs cloaks to get through it" [C. Zavattini]
I spent part of my life on a train, crossing the Po Valley. While travelling, I fixed my attention on the landscape, composed by a few elements which were repeated, but never repetitive. Fields, farmsteads, hedges, tree lines, electric wires, streets stay on different dynamic grounds. Depending on their being near or far from my point of view, they move at different speed, following different paths. There is one break to it: the river that dug this valley. Getting across it it means to interrupt for a few moments the rhythm of the landscape, until the skyline starts to spread again up to the horizon, far away.
Silence is the dominant sound of the plain: one hears mostly the words of those who live along the river. The language spoken by this people is not neutral like a national tongue: their life, which follows the seasons of the land, the history, that passed through those places, they are still in the words they use. The materials I have chosen are based on the sounds of the language spoken by the River.
