Goffredo Petrassi
Toccata
(1933)
for Piano

Length: 07:05
Editor: Ricordi

Counterpoint can be used for expressing exquisitely romantic contents, without renouncing a strict structural severity. An example of this is Goffredo Petrassi's Toccata which is characterized by the presence of particularly abstract and contemplative moments. In Toccata, powerful dynamic explosions originate in the rigorous counterpoint culminating in full and engulfing timbres, close to the sonority of an organ. The piece ends in a calm and ecstatic mood which recalls the canonical beginning.
