Antonio Ballista - Biography
Milano, 1936

Instrument: Conductor - Piano
Pianist, harpsichordist and conductor, since the beginning of his career, he dedicated himself to the study of a wide range of musical expressions and to the realization of programmes of rare inventiveness and originality. Since 1950s he has collaborated with Bruno Canino in the formation of a piano duo: an uninterrupted collaboration of fundamental value for the diffusion of New Music and which has still a catalytic effect on composers. He has performed with conductors such as Abbado, Boulez, Chailly, Maderna and Mutiand. He has been invited to take part in the most prestigious music festivals (Paris, Edimburg, Warsaw, Berlin, Strasbourg, Venice and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino). He made his debut as opera conductor at the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome in Battiato's Gilgamesch. Berio, Bussotti, Castiglioni, Donatoni, Morricone and Sciarrino are some of the composers who have written for him. He has performed works by Berio, Dallapiccola and Stockhausen on tour and has collaborated with Boulez, Cage and Ligeti on monographic concerts. He is the conductor of the "Novecento e oltre" ensemble, which he founded in 1995. The ensemble performs both music of the early XXth century and more recent trends. He has recorded for RCA, Wergo and EMI. He has been teaching piano for twenty-three years at the Conservatory in Milan.
