Mauro Ceccanti obtained a diploma in violin at Florence Conservatory and was member of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino until 1981 with the role of "concertino" first violin. He attended an advanced training course of orchestra conducting with Franco Ferrara in Rome and at Accademia Chigiana di Siena, an in Hilversum (Holland) with Kyrill Kondrashin. He conducted some of the most important Italian orchestras and given many concerts in Italy (Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Teatro La Fenice, Sala Bossi, Orchestra della RAI, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Orchestra di Bergamo) and in foreign countries (Germany, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and United Kingdom). He conducted several premières of works by Peter Maxwell Davies, Hans Werner Henze, Ramon Barce, Marc Yeats, Adriano Guarnieri, Sergio Liberovici, A. Riccardo Luciani, Luca Lombardi, Alessandro Sbordoni, Sylvano Bussotti, Salvatore Sciarrino, Giorgio Battistelli, collaborating with leading directors of opera performances and musical theatre works such as Egisto Marcucci, Patrizia Gracis, Virginio Puecher, Giuliano Scabia, Giuseppe Di Leva and Luigi Squarzina.
In 1992 he founded Contempoarteensemple, an ensemble specialised in contemporary music. Mauro Ceccanti's activity is a successful research of the possibilities of overcoming the traditional values that still separate music from the language of visual arts; this allowed him to make his name known to the international critics thanks to the quality of his performances and recordings. He realised five CDs for ARTS publishing house, including works written on purpose by artists like Folon and Sol Lewitt: this CD is the only one to have been shown at MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York including works by Sciarrino, Bussotti, Berio and Xenakis.
The world première recording of Aspern Suite by Sciarrino was recently published; he also recorded Pierrot Lunaire by Schoenberg and Dérive by Boulez. He performed the works by Fabio Vacchi for the film soundtrack "Il Mestiere delle Armi" commissioned by BGM/Ricordi. He also recorded for Foné and Bongiovanni publishing houses two works by P. Mascagni: Il Piccolo Marat and Zanetto; thanks to this work he won Asolo Musica Viva Prize. He has taught at Scuola di Musica di Fiesole since its foundation until 2001, where he created the Orchestra dei Ragazzi. He has been teaching at Florence Conservatory since 1974. He is Artistic Manager of "Suoni e Colori in Toscana" Festival.
