Gianpaolo Antongirolami studied saxophone at the Conservatory of Fermo, where he obtained his diploma with full marks and honours in 1986. He continued his studies with Jean-Marie Londeix. He also obtained his diploma in Electronic Music at the Conservatory of Pesaro.
He performs as a soloist and with orchestra and chamber music ensembles, focusing on 20th and 21st century music. His repertoire includes works by composers like Berio, Bussotti, Bennett, Bryars, Cage, Donatoni, Gentilucci, Glass, Grisey, Manzoni, Nyman, Risset, Scelsi, Sciarrino, Stockhausen, Torke, Xenakis.
He is interested in research, innovation, and experimentation and focusing on electro-acoustic music, both as a researcher and a performer. In 1997 he was selected out of 700 hundred proposals to perform at ISEA-97 (International Symposium on Electronic Art) in Chicago.
In 1998 he realised a new version of "Solo" by Karlheinz Stockhausen for saxophone and real-time digital processor (Kyma/Capibara) which was presented on the occasion of Stockhausen's 70th birthday, at concerts and conferences throughout Italy. He has been performing in electro-acoustic music festivals and concert series.
Since 2000, together with Roberto Doati (one of the most important composer/performers of electro-acoustic music in Europe), he has undertaken a project aiming to research and present works extant works that combine saxophone with electronic devices. The duo "SaxMachine" has most of the works of this kind in its repertoire as a result of continuous updating and close collaboration with electro-acoustic music composers and researchers from all over the world.
He is frequently invited to give special courses, master-classes and concerts at important European musical institutes such as the Musikhochschule in Freiburg, Germany (1993 and 2000).
For many years he has taught contemporary chamber music classes in the context of advanced training courses under the supervision of the flautist Roberto Fabbriciani.
In 2003 he was invited to the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg (Austria) as a guest teacher, also giving a recital for saxophone and electronics at the Wiener Saal.
He has taught saxophone at various Italian Conservatories of Music since 1987 and currently holds the chair of saxophone at the "F. Morlacchi" Conservatory in Perugia.
